General Job Responsibilities
Key responsibilities of the Tankermen/PIC position include, but are not limited to, the following: Responsible for the safe, efficient, reliable, and environmentally compliant operation of assigned area; Prepare the barges that are assigned to his boat for safe and complete loading and discharging of oil, refined, and petrochemical barges; Make certain that any and all federal and state required documents that must accompany the barges are on board and in proper order; Communicate with dock personnel and ensure that each person participating in the transfer of the product understands what the product is and how it should be transferred and protected; Participate in the maintenance of the boat and barges, and help with the training of newly hired employees aspiring to become Tankerman/PIC; Able to handle lines and rigging during tow building, locking, and docking activities; Must be able to work a 12-Hour day and willing to take on-call responsibility if the need arises; Follow and adhere to all company policies, United States Coast Guard and environmental regulations; Possess sufficient fitness to perform heavy physical labor involving lifting, carrying, pushing and pulling various materials and tools, climbing ladders, stairwells, and push-knees while working in climate weather with temperatures that may vary from extreme cold to extreme hot; Must be able to work in hot weather while wearing required PPE while performing any task above (i.e. respirators, goggles, etc.); Lifting and carrying hoses from one vessel to another involving stairs or push-knees is an example of a work activity requiring good fitness; Deckhand experience is preferred.

Minimum Job Qualifications
Tankermen/PIC applicants must be able to: Tolerate long hours during transfers; Read and write; Communicate with co-workers, Captains, Pilots, Wheelman, Dispatchers, Port Engineers, Coast Guard Inspectors, and others; Remain calm during challenging situations; Posses a valid driver's license for operation of any of the company's vehicles; Make good decisions; Be dependable, conscientious, and show initiative; Pay attention to detail; Be willing to adhere to orders, rules, and regulations; Work as a team player - i.e., work with others and understand customer/ supplier wants and needs; Be stable under pressure and withstand the stress associated with the job, including discomfort, unpredictable weather, and potentially hazardous situation; Work aboard the vessel for prolonged periods according to work schedule for the vessel; Be drug and alcohol free while on company property during course and scope of company business; Be physically fit to perform all essential physical demands of this job safely.

General Manager/Production Superintendent Position Available

 James Marine, Inc. (JMI) has an immediate opening for a General Manager/Production Superintendent at our James Built facility located in Calvert City, KY. James Marine Inc. is one of the fastest growing companies in the region. Specifically, the James Built division concentrates on specialty projects such as dry docks, tank barges, ferries, small to mid-size tugs, deck barges and work flats.  We offer competitive wages & benefits packages that include health / dental, life insurance, paid holidays, matching 401K & more.  

The ideal candidate should possess the following skills/qualifications:

  • Solid knowledge and experience in boat and barge construction or repair
  • Be able to read and understand blueprints and other construction diagrams
  • Have past experience with the direct supervision of others

·         Working experience with tank barges in the river service industry

  • Familiar with the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) rules on fitting and welding standards
  • Must be able to develop and administer budgets for marine construction projects
  • Accurately forecast the scope, cost, and duration of current and future projects
  • Excellent communication skills (both written and verbal) required
  • Excellent organizational, interpersonal, decision-making and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously
  • Ability to work well independently as well as in a team environment
  • Must have an understanding of math and mathematical concepts
  • Must have ability to read and write English
  • Must be willing to work overtime as required, including weekends if necessary
  • Be able to read and understand specifications of each task
  • Responsible for inspecting and approving jobs
  • Responsible for making quality-related decisions based on specific requirements
  • Work with Front-line Supervisors to handle nonconformity complaints and follow-ups with customers/vendors as required
  • Assist with investigations and follow up on corrective action responses
  • Candidates must be organized, analytical, and capable of communicating with all personnel – hourly, supervisory, and management
  • Computer skills, specifically with Microsoft Office Products, such as Word and Excel are required

Education Required:

  • High school diploma required
  • 4-year BS degree is preferred, however, prior hands-on experience in a similar role in the boat/barge construction industry is a plus and will also be considered
  • 5-8 years of experience as a Supervisor with boat/barge construction and/or repair operati

 Human Resources Generalist

Position Title: Human Resources Generalist

Reports to: Director of Human Resources

Location: James Marine Corporate Office

FLSA Status: Exempt 

Summary:

The HR Generalist assists James Marine, Inc. in achieving its corporate goals by providing direct support to all employees (both current and former) and working closely with the HR Director to maintain positive employee relations. 

Essential duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Assists with the successful execution of JMI policies, which includes but is not limited to, the ADA, FMLA, GINA, EEO and Intimidation/Harassment policies, as well as the Collective Bargaining Agreement. 
  • Performs all administrative duties for implementing and tracking employees’ Short-Term Disability, Long-Term Disability, and FMLA leaves of absences. 
  • Assists the Director of HR with determining and tracking employees’ eligibility for ADA accommodations as well as an employee’s eligibility for a leave of absence.
  • Enrolls new employees in insurance benefits and serves as the primary contact for claims resolution
  • Schedules quarterly 401K enrollment meetings and assists in getting the correct allocations and contributions established for employees.
  • Determines the optimal process for “HR Delivery” to all employees at James Marine, Inc. and its affiliated and subsidiary companies.
    • This requires regular visits to all JMI worksites to effectively answer employee questions, address concerns/complaints, post company memos and meeting schedules, and effectively maintain positive morale amongst the workforce.
  • Attends monthly HR department meetings to update fellow staff members on current projects, address concerns, and plan for future endeavors within the department & JMI as a whole. 
  • Assists the HR Director by participating in employee investigations, effectively documenting along the way. 
  • Utilizes the company’s HRIS system (ABRA) to compile reports as needed for the HR Director.  Inputs notes from conversations held with employees pertaining to leaves, complaints, investigations, terminations, etc. for documentation purposes.
  • Maintains compliance with federal and state regulations concerning employment.

Education/Experience/Demands:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Business is required; an emphasis in Human Resource Management is preferred. 
  • A minimum of 3 years experience in the Human Resource field is required, especially in the areas of employee relations and benefit administration. 
  • Professional in Human Resources (PHR) certification preferred.
  • Experience with labor relations is a plus.
  • Familiarity with ABRA, James Marine’s HRIS system, is preferred but not required. 
  • Must possess proficiency in using a computer, including email and Microsoft Office package.
  • Bi-lingual in English & Spanish helpful, but not necessary

Physical Requirements:

The Generalist’s role involves sedentary work most of the time in an office setting.  However, approximately 25% of the time involves walking, standing, driving and occasionally boarding vessels while on the job sites Exerts up to 10 pounds of force occasionally.
